Tips for Your Baby’s First Thanksgiving

Updated: Oct 27

Tips for your baby's first Thanksgiving

Welcoming a new baby into your life means every holiday becomes a little more magical – and a little more complicated. Between babyproofing, nursery setup, endless diaper changes and sleepless nights, it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed.

We know how unfamiliar it feels to get ready for your baby’s first Thanksgiving. So, we invite you to keep reading for some holiday advice from our newborn experts that’ll help keep your holiday memorable and stress-free.

A Thanksgiving Feast Fit for a (Tiny) King or Queen

Luckily, many traditional holiday foods are safe for babies, as long as they’re served properly!

For 6-8-month-olds, offer these foods:

  • Potatoes. Mashed and plain

  • Sweet potatoes. Baked or mashed

  • Cooked peas or carrots. Well-cooked and mashed

  • Applesauce. Unsweetened only

For 9-12-month-olds, branch out with these foods:

  • Rolls or soft bread. Small, bite-sized pieces

  • Green beans. Steamed and unseasoned

  • Plain turkey. Chopped or shredded into small pieces

  • Pumpkin pie. Just the filling

Pro Tip: Plan to set aside small portions of each safe dish for your baby before you add seasonings or sauces. This way, your little one gets to try what everyone else is eating!

Packing for Your Baby’s First Thanksgiving

If you plan to host, travel or visit with friends or family, a little preparation can go a long way in keeping your baby happy!

Here are a few essentials you won’t want to forget to pack or keep easily accessible:

  • Pacifiers or comfort items

  • A change of clothes (or two)

  • Breastmilk, formula, and their favorite snacks

  • Extra diapers and wipes (pack more than you think you’ll need)

And regardless of where you spend your holiday, stick to your baby’s usual nap and feeding schedule. Even with the holiday excitement, your little one will find comfort in the routine.

5 Tips for Your Baby’s First Thanksgiving

1. Document all the “firsts.”

Remember to take lots of photos and videos, and don’t worry about making everything “picture-perfect.” The candid shots are the ones you’ll cherish later on!

2. Be flexible.

As you know, babies are unpredictable. It’s okay if plans change and look different than other years!

3. Include your little one in the fun.

Set up a safe space for your kiddo to be around everyone else. Set up their high chair at the table and offer them safe, festive foods.

4. Start a new tradition.

Start a new tradition to enjoy with your little one in the years to come. This could be anything from a themed family photo to a fun game to watching a holiday movie together.

5. Put yourself first.

If you’re not ready for holiday festivities, it’s okay to say no! Give yourself permission to decline plans – even if you already agreed to them.
