Believe it or not, those tiny sniffles and sneezes from your little one might not be just another cold. Seasonal allergies can affect babies, too, leaving parents wondering how to provide relief for their uncomfortable little ones. But what are the signs of allergies in babies? And how can you help them feel better?
Don't worry, new parents! We're covering everything you need to know down below.
Do Newborns Have Allergies?
While true seasonal allergies are uncommon in babies under 12 months, they can develop allergy-like symptoms from environmental irritants. Most allergists agree that babies typically need at least one or two seasons of exposure to allergens before developing a true allergic response.
However, newborn allergy symptoms can include:
Persistent stuffy or runny nose with clear discharge
Sneezing
Itchy, watery, or red eyes
Wheezing or coughing
Dry, itchy skin or unexpected rashes
If you notice these symptoms persisting in your baby, especially during high pollen seasons, they might be experiencing early allergy responses. However, always consult with your pediatrician before assuming allergies or trying any treatments!
Saline Suctioning: A Gentle Solution for Stuffy Noses
One of the simplest and safest ways to help your baby breathe easier is through saline suctioning.
Saline drops. Start by applying a few drops of infant saline solution to each nostril. This helps loosen dried mucus and moisturize the nasal passages!
Wait briefly. Next, give the saline solution 30-60 seconds to work its magic and dissolve mucus.
Gentle suctioning. Then, use a bulb syringe or nasal aspirator to gently remove the loosened mucus.
For babies with allergy symptoms, doing this 2-3 times daily can provide significant relief. And saline suctioning is particularly helpful before feedings and bedtime, as babies are nose-breathers and need clear airways to eat and sleep comfortably!
Humidifier: Creating an Allergy-Friendly Environment
Basically, dry air can worsen allergy symptoms by irritating your little one’s delicate nasal passages. That’s why we recommend using a humidifier to add moisture to the air, helping to:
Soothe irritated airways
Thin mucus for easier drainage
Create an environment where allergens are less likely to circulate
When using a humidifier in your baby's room:
Choose cool mist. These are safer for nurseries than hot steam versions.
Clean regularly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to prevent mold growth.
Position safely. Place it out of reach but close enough to provide benefits.
Maintain ideal humidity. Keep levels between 40-50% to discourage dust mite and mold growth.
Additionally, a humidifier can be particularly helpful during sleep, when congestion often feels worse!
Bathing Each Night: Washing Away Allergens
Another easily overlooked strategy for managing baby allergies is the simple evening bath! Here's why it works:
Pollen and other outdoor allergens collect on skin and hair throughout the day
Bathing before bed removes these irritants
This prevents allergens from transferring to bedding and being inhaled all night
For maximum benefit:
Use mild, fragrance-free soap designed for sensitive skin
Focus on washing hair thoroughly, as it can trap significant amounts of pollen
Apply a gentle moisturizer immediately after bathing to prevent skin dryness
Keep bath time brief (5-10 minutes) to avoid drying out the baby's skin
Essentially, this nighttime ritual creates a clean sleep environment and can significantly reduce overnight allergy symptoms!
When to See the Doctor for Newborn Allergies
While mild allergy symptoms can often be managed at home, certain signs indicate a need for medical attention:
Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
Severe coughing or wheezing
Signs of discomfort that interfere with eating or sleeping
Symptoms that don't improve with home management
Any worrisome changes in your baby's behavior
