Melissa O’Neill founded Newborn Nightingales in 2012 with one goal in mind — to provide expert support for new parents. As a registered NICU nurse and mother of three, she’s seen firsthand just how difficult the early days of motherhood can be. That’s precisely what prompted her to start Newborn Nightingales!

The Moment Melissa Realized Families Deserve More Support

Melissa spent years supporting families in the hospital setting to start her career.. She was able to assist and guide new mothers during those first few days with their little ones. But it wasn’t until she became a mother herself that she experienced the other side of that equation.

After giving birth to her first child, Melissa says she “experienced firsthand how overwhelming those early weeks at home can feel, even with a strong medical background.” That realization led her to start informally consulting with a few families found by word of mouth. 

She noticed a serious lack of support for new families after being discharged from the hospital. And when it came to taking care of a newborn, “parents weren’t just looking for information—they were looking for reassurance and support.” 

As Melissa’s work with families grew, so did her understanding of what they truly needed. Guidance alone wasn’t always enough. Many parents were looking for hands-on, in-home support during those early weeks. That realization led Melissa to build her team of carefully trained caregivers, who would bring trusted newborn support directly into families’ homes.

The Philosophy Behind Newborn Nightingales

Melissa wanted her practice to help new moms feel safe and supported. Her goal was to provide the expertise that hospitals offer, with the warmth of being at home. Therefore, she founded Newborn Nightingales with a strategic combination of clinical knowledge, real-life practicality, and comfort.
