What to Expect From an Overnight Newborn Nurse

What to expect from an overnight newborn nurse?

A concept that you may or may not be familiar with – overnight newborn nurses. As you enter parenthood, you can quickly realize just how taxing caring for your little one is. Especially for premature babies or twins, full-time care is hard and tiring work. And that’s exactly what overnight nurses for newborns are for!

Now, it’s important to know just what you’re considering when you ponder the idea of outsourcing newborn care. At Newborn Nightingales, you can rest assured we’re committed to transparency and the highest-quality care. (We truly love being a part of your family’s exciting journey into parenthood.)

What is an Overnight Nurse for Newborns?

Essentially, an overnight baby nurse is fully licensed and trained to support you and your newborns when you need it most – throughout the night. (Taking care of newborns is exhausting and a round-the-clock job!) Getting enough sleep can help you be an even better parent – and allows you to acquire energy to bond with your baby during the day.

While services may differ for individual families, a nighttime shift typically includes:

  • Feeding, bottle preparation, and cleaning

  • Creating healthy sleep routines

  • Soothing and comforting your baby

  • Diapering and changing

  • Logging feedings, sleep patterns, and other observations

And the best part is, each of these services can be easily tailored to fit your baby’s and family’s needs! Each overnight nurse for newborn care on our team has undergone extensive training and vetting, so you can rest assured that your family will be in the best hands.

Who Can Benefit from an Infant Care Specialist?

Nighttime care is suited for all caregivers of newborns! However, more specifically, our services are designed to support first-time parents who may be overwhelmed by the exhaustion that comes with the new lifestyle change.

Additionally, overnight nurses for babies are an ideal service for parents of twins, triplets, or preemies. Having a night nurse helps you recover from labor, decreases the risk for postpartum depression, and helps strengthen your relationships with your little ones.

Because the key to giving your baby 100% of your energy and attention during the day? Ensuring you get a full night's rest!

What Does an Overnight Newborn Nurse Shift Look Like?

Typically, shifts begin at around 9:00 p.m. and end between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. At the beginning of the shift, you can tell your nurse about the day’s events, with thorough details about feeding and sleeping patterns – so they’re fully up to date on all things baby!

From that point, the overnight nurse will assume all care of your baby and feed, change, soothe, burp, and rock your baby – all while you’re getting some much-needed rest. They are also a great resource for all things baby, sleep, lactation and postpartum. In the morning, the nurse will show you the log of the nighttime patterns, make recommendations if appropriate, and you can confidently take over again!
