How to Dress a Newborn in Winter

Winter is officially in full swing! And while we all adore the cuddle sessions, hot chocolate sips, and Hallmark movie binges, cold weather brings a crucial question for new parents: how to dress a newborn in winter?

Since little ones lose and gain heat faster than we do, the secret to success is simply layering and staying aware. Keep scrolling, and our newborn care experts will reveal precisely how to do just that!

How to Dress a Newborn in Winter?

The easiest way to get your baby’s outfit right is to use yourself as the benchmark, then add one extra, removable layer for your little one.

  • Indoors. If you’re comfortable in a light, long-sleeve shirt, your baby should have on a onesie, pants, a long-sleeve shirt, and a swaddle/sleep sack.

  • Outdoors. If you’re chilly and wearing a sweater or light jacket, dress your baby in a onesie, a long-sleeve shirt, pants, a coat, and a blanket/stroller bunting. A hat is always a welcome addition to windy, cold days.

The Three Essential Layers for Infants and Cold Weather

So, you’re wondering how to dress a newborn in winter? Focus on these three layers:

1. The Base Layer (Moisture-Wicking)

This first layer sits against your little one’s skin (think: diaper, onesie, footed pajamas, etc.). Its job is to wick away sweat, keeping your baby dry and comfy. Stick to breathable cotton or thin synthetic blends, and avoid anything too heavy (like fleece) here.

2. The Middle Layer (Insulation)

The middle layer is where the warmth happens! Essentially, it’s intended to trap air and hold your little one’s body heat. (It’s also the one you’ll peel off as soon as you step inside.) We love fleece, knit sweaters, and thicker cotton shirts here.

3. The Outer Layer (Protection)

This final layer shields your baby from the elements. Think: their winter coat, a cozy snowsuit, or stroller bunting.

Car Seat Safety

If you remember one thing this winter, let it be this golden rule: NEVER buckle your baby into a car seat while they’re wearing a puffy coat or snowsuit.

The fluff and thickness of these coats create slack in the harness straps. If there’s an accident, the coat can compress – leaving the straps dangerously loose and increasing your baby’s risk of injury.

Instead, dress your baby in their thin base and middle layers, buckle them tightly, and then use the coat or a thick blanket over the already-secured straps.

Preventing Infant Overheating

Overheating is a serious risk tied to SIDS, so checking your baby’s temperature is critical. Don’t check their hands or feet (they’re naturally cooler); instead, check the back of their neck or chest. If it’s sweaty, clammy, or flushed, remove a layer immediately.
